Union Station Connects Denver to the World

Denver's Union Station

Union Station is the primary railway station and transportation hub in Denver, Colorado. It is located at Wynkoop Street and 17th in the Lower Downtown (LoDo) district. Union Station’s eateries, shops, and hotel are world class. We took the afternoon to enjoy just some of what it has to offer.

While we rode the light rail in from the south, I reflected on the history of Union Station along the way. We passed historic sites likes Gates Rubber and the Buckhorn Exchange restaurant. The first station opened up on June 1, 1881, but burnt to the ground in 1894. The structure that exists today was build in two stages and was completed in 1914.

The station underwent a massive renovation in 2012, which transformed it into the transit magnet it is today. The main station house reopened in 2014 and is a key gathering place in the heart of downtown.

As we stepped off the train, we immediately saw the brand spanking new University of Colorado A Line (definitely some great exposure for Liz’s and my alma mater!). The line is a 23-mile railway that directly connects downtown Denver to Denver International Airport. This railway has been long awaited, and I can already hear its positive impact roaring down the tracks.

I can’t believe my eyes when I enter Union Station. I’ve been in this building at least 20 times since it reopened, but its grandeur delights every time. The rooms of The Crawford Hotel, Denver’s independent luxury hotel located in Union Station, peer down on the main area. There are coffee shops, people bustling, and business deals going down.

We decide to make our way to the patio of The Kitchen Next Door to grab some lunch. Merlin’s Carolina Pork sandwich and a Santa Fe Brewery “Happy Camper” IPA turn out to be just what the doctor ordered.

The kids running and jumping through the nearby fountain on Union Station’s east side provide endless entertainment. We next visit the Tattered Cover and flip through some Colorado travel books. I simply can’t help but think that Union Station is just one more reason to fall in love with Denver.
