Nestled on West 32nd Street in the Denver’s ever-growing hip and happening Highland neighborhood sits Sushi Hai, a Japanese sushi bar and steak house. The building is large and multi-leveled, and there are comfortable seating arrangements for just about anyone. On this particular visit, I was celebrating the engagement of a good friend. She opted to have us seated in one of Sushi Hai’s tatami rooms where we would have a little privacy. We also had to remove our shoes to enter the room – good thing I was wearing matching socks that day! 🙂
Being an eclectic group that night, we ordered drinks ranging from large Asahi beers to New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc to a couple very nice bottles of Junmai Daiginjo sake. To get the party started we ordered some spicy edamame with garlic, yum! Dinner had it all goin’ on with some nigiri: hamachi belly (yellow tail tummy), maguro (tuna), kaibashira (scallops), ameibi (sweet shrimp with heads). The rolls: spicy tuna (yeah, yeah, boring but I love it), negihama (yellowtail with scallion), #18, chicsho maki, rocket roll, crunchy roll, and more. And we had a gorgeous assortment of fresh sashimi. Our server was a good sport and kept giving us food, drink, and fresh chopsticks when we dropped them. Sushi Hai is a great place to eat good, fresh food and get great service. Kampai, kampai good old Sushi Hai!
