Canyon Pintado Waving Hands Site

1. a painted pictorial symbol for a word or phrase.

2. a record consisting of pictorial symbols, such as a prehistoric cave drawing or a graph or chart, with symbolic figures representing a certain number of people, animals, etc.

Pictographs were used as the earliest known form of writing, examples having been discovered in Egypt and Mesopotamia dating back to before 3000 BC.  In Colorado, some of the best pictographs can be viewed at Mesa Verde, Canyon Pintado, Dinosaur National Monument, Rabbit Valley, and Picketwire Canyon.
