About Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado, the state’s capital and most populated city, dates back to the Old West. The broader Denver metropolitan area has just shy of 3 million people. Larimer Square – one of the city’s oldest blocks – features landmark 19th-century buildings. Popular museums include the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, Denver Children’s Museum, Denver Art Museum, and the mansion of famed Titanic survivor Molly Brown. Denver is also the primary jumping-off point for ski resorts in the nearby Rocky Mountains (check out some of Colorado’s top mountain towns).

Denver sits in the South Platte River Valley on the western edge of the High Plains. It is just east of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Denver’s downtown district is immediately east of the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River, where gold was first found in 1858. The discovery of gold brought in thousands of people.

Denver is nicknamed the Mile High City because its official elevation is exactly one mile (5280 feet) above sea level, making it the highest major city in the U.S. You can fly into Denver International Airport, stay the night in the Westin DIA Hotel, take the train into Union Station in downtown Denver, and then continue to explore from there. You don’t want to miss out on catching a Colorado Rockies game at Coors Field or a Denver Broncos game (at what I will forever call Mile High Stadium).
