About Cañon City, Colorado
Cañon City, Colorado is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Fremont County. Cañon City sits along the easterly flowing Arkansas River and is a popular tourist destination for sightseeing (especially at the Royal Gorge), whitewater rafting, jeeping, and rock climbing. The city is somewhat infamous for being the location of nine state and four federal prisons and penitentiaries, and a welcoming sign that reads, “Corrections Capital of the World.”
From Cañon City’s Historic Downtown District to the Royal Gorge Bridge, there are many places to see and visit in the area. Cañon City is a key stop along the Gold Belt Tour National Scenic Byway, one of Colorado’s best byways. You can also visit Skyline Drive, a major scenic route overlooking Cañon City that was originally built by local inmates at the Territorial Prison.
Don’t miss out on the fine wine at the historic Holy Cross Abbey. Since July 2002, The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey has been attracting visitors from all over the planet. The winery and tasting room are a great way to parch your high desert thirst!
