Colorado Fourteeners Checklist

Mount of the Holy Cross

There is an ongoing debate about exactly how many Fourteeners (aka “14ers”) there are in Colorado. The Colorado Geological Survey says there are 58 peaks that exceed 14,000 feet in elevation. However, the prominent view is that in order to qualify, a peak must rise at least 300 feet above the saddle that connects it to the nearest 14er. According to this view, which Nomad Colorado has adopted for our Colorado Fourteeners checklist, there are 53 peaks rising 14,000 feet or higher – the most of any state in the U.S.

Climbing a fourteener is the essential Colorado bucket list item. The best part is that many 14ers are located within a few hours’ drive from Colorado Springs, Denver, and Fort Collins. Each fourteener offers a different experience and all provide breathtaking views.

We’re not going to say that climbing up a Fourteener is a piece of cake. You need to be in good shape, be prepared to do 4 to 12 hours of hiking, be acclimated to Colorado’s high elevation, and have some general mountain hiking experience. Climbing Longs Peak or Little Bear Peak for your first Fourteener probably isn’t a great idea.

Do you want to start keeping track of all the Fourteeners you’ve hiked? Print off and fill out one of our two printable Fourteener Checklists from the links below.
